You had a brilliant idea in the shower. You sketched it out. Built the prototype. Maybe even got a logo. You’re pumped – this is the one.
But wait – have you talked to your customer yet?
Here’s the hard truth:
Many founders fall madly in love with their product idea... and forget the most important ingredient for success: the customer.
They build in silence, polish in isolation, and proudly launch – only to discover that no one really wants what they created. It’s not because the product is bad. It’s because it was never validated.
Why does this happen?
Because validation feels uncomfortable. It means opening your idea to feedback – or worse, rejection. So instead, many founders take the “safe route”:
They ask their friends.
Their family.
Maybe some former colleagues.
And guess what? They get a thumbs up. “Cool idea!” “I’d totally use that!”
But here’s the catch: those people are often not your target audience – and they might just be caught up in yourexcitement. Not their own real-world need.
Falling in love with your customer means:
- Asking real users the right questions.
Not “Do you like it?” – but “When was the last time this problem annoyed you?”
You want honesty, not politeness. - Testing often, learning fast.
Whether it’s a landing page, a paper prototype, or a 10-minute call – early insights beat late regrets. - Letting go of your ego.
Your idea might change. That’s not failure – that’s growth.
Bottom line:
Your product is not your baby.
It’s a hypothesis. A tool. A solution.
And it only matters if it solves a real problem for a real human being.
So go ahead – be passionate. Be creative. Be bold.
But before you fall head over heels for your product…
fall in love with your customer first.
That’s where real innovation begins.
